Orioles host Mariners in clash of last-place clubs
Baseball Betting Lines
08/16/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A pair of last-place teams playing out the string get
together tonight in the opener of a three-game series at Camden Yards, where
the host Baltimore Orioles take on the Seattle Mariners.
Baltimore is 9-4 under new manager Buck Showalter, but lost the last two
installments of a three-game series at Tampa Bay over the weekend. After
winning Friday's series opener by a 5-0 score, the Orioles dropped a 7-3
decision the following day before losing, 3-2, in Sunday's series finale.
Jake Arrieta was saddled with the loss for giving up all three runs and six
hits in six innings of work.
Jake Fox belted a solo homer for the Orioles, who lost their first series with
Showalter at the helm.
"Games like this were the type of games that in the future we are going to
have to win," Showalter told the team's site. "We are going to have to do a
better job of minimizing the damage, because you never know how much is enough
and you are always thinking about the what if's."
Baltimore, last in the AL East, will kick off a seven-game homestand Monday
and is also scheduled to host Texas for four games on the residency. It will
send Brad Bergesen to the mound tonight, and he's hoping to build off a strong
outing his previous time out. Bergesen tossed a two-hitter at Cleveland last
Wednesday and allowed just one run with four strikeouts and two walks to push
his record to 4-9 in 21 games (19 starts).
Bergesen won for the first time since May 12 versus Seattle. He threw 7 2/3
innings of one-run ball that day against the Mariners and is 2-2 in five
career starts in this series.
The Mariners, basement dwellers in the AL West, began their 12-game road trip
by winning two of three meetings with the Cleveland Indians, but failed to
complete the sweep with Sunday's 9-1 disaster at Progressive Field.
Seattle ace Felix Hernandez continued his struggles and was roughed up for six
unearned runs over 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. Hernandez, who is now 1-5
in his last six decisions, struck out seven and walked four batters. He also
gave up a grand slam to Travis Hafner during a seven-run seventh inning.
"I should have made a better pitch," Hernandez said on Seattle's site.
Franklin Gutierrez provided the only offense with an RBI single for Seattle,
which had won six of eight entering the series finale.
Seattle, which is scheduled to visit the Yankees and Red Sox as well on the
trek, will hand the ball to Doug Fister tonight, and he's 4-8 with a 3.86
earned run average in 19 starts this season. Fister was 0-7 with a 5.65 ERA in
an 11-start span before beating Oakland last Monday with six innings of one-
run ball.
Fister hopes to beat the Orioles again after handing them a loss back on April
19 of this season. The right-hander held Baltimore to a run and three hits in
seven innings of an 8-2 victory at Safeco Field.
The Mariners have won four of six games against Baltimore this season, but
lost two of three matchups at Camden Yards from May 11-13.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
